1. Introduction

These Terms of Service ("these Terms") set out the conditions for using Kotoba Quest (the "app") offered by 株式会社メディアリープ ("we", "us"). By using the app, users are deemed to have agreed to these Terms.

For the "Kotoba Pro" subscription purchased in the app, the App Store or Google Play terms and subscription policies also apply in addition to these Terms.

2. Definitions

App: The Kotoba Quest apps (iOS and Android) and their screens offered by us.
Users: All persons who use the app.
Content: Learning scenes, text, illustrations, audio, characters, designs and other materials included in the app.
AI features: Features that use external AI services, such as AI pronunciation feedback and the AI tutor.
Kotoba Pro: The monthly or annual paid plan that can be subscribed to in the app.

3. Contents of the app

The app offers a Japanese learning course (scenes, reviews, notes, readers and more). Every course scene and every review is free to use, and no ads are shown. AI features are experimental and subject to fair-use limits shown in the app.

The main learning features work offline. Learning backup, AI features and notifications require connectivity. Communication costs are borne by the user.

4. Accounts

Anonymous use without creating an account is the default. Sign-in with Apple or Google is only needed to use learning backup.

If you sign in, you are responsible for managing your account. You can delete your account at any time from "Delete account" in the app. Learning records, notes and diary entries are removed from the device when you uninstall the app (except backups).

5. Kotoba Pro (subscription)

Kotoba Pro is an auto-renewing subscription with a monthly and an annual plan. New subscribers get a 7-day free trial on both plans. Prices follow what the app and the store show. Payment is charged to your Apple ID payment method (App Store) or through Google Play billing (Google Play) when the subscription starts after the free trial, and renews automatically at the start of each period.

You can manage or cancel at any time in your App Store or Google Play account settings. Turning off auto-renew stops renewal at the end of the current period. After cancellation, the free learning features and your saved learning record remain available. Refunds follow the store’s policies.

6. AI features

AI answers are generated by a general model and may be wrong. AI answers are never used for your progress, scores or judgements in the app. Pronunciation feedback is reference information, not an assessment.

You are responsible for what you input to AI features. Do not input content that infringes others’ rights or violates laws. AI features have fair-use limits shown in the app; limits may change for operational reasons.

7. Rights to Content

Copyrights and other intellectual property rights in the Content belong to us or to licensors we license from. Except for private learning use, do not reproduce, reprint, transmit to the public, adapt or commercially use Content without permission. Names and logos such as "Kotoba Quest" are our trademarks or equivalent marks.

8. Prohibited acts

Users must not do any of the following in using the app.

Acts that violate laws or public order and morals, or connect to crime
Infringing the intellectual property rights, reputation, privacy or other rights of us or third parties
Unauthorized access to our systems, probing or attacking vulnerabilities, or mass access with unauthorized automated tools
Systematically extracting or collecting our Content beyond private learning use
Creating or using accounts to circumvent these Terms or the operation of the app
Any other act that we judge to be inappropriate

9. Device and environment

Devices, operating systems and connectivity required for the app follow the listings on the App Store or Google Play. We are not liable for the app becoming unusable due to device failure, OS updates or connectivity limits unless caused by our willful misconduct or gross negligence.

10. Changes, suspension and termination

We may change the app (including free features) or suspend or terminate all or part of it. Course content may be added or changed to improve quality. We are not liable for resulting damages except as provided in the next section. If we significantly reduce a subscribed feature, we will announce it in the app in advance.

11. Disclaimer

The app is intended to assist Japanese learning; it does not guarantee particular learning outcomes, exam passage or language proficiency. How you learn and what you achieve are your own responsibility.

The app is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind. For the nature of AI features (that answers can be wrong), see "6. AI features".

12. Damages and limitation of liability

We are not liable for damages suffered by users in connection with the app unless caused by our willful misconduct or gross negligence. Even when liable, our compensation is limited to the fees you paid us in the preceding 12 months (or 1,000 yen if you only used free features), and we are not liable for lost profits, indirect or special damages.

If any provision of these Terms conflicts with mandatory provisions of consumer protection laws or other laws, that provision is read in accordance with such laws without affecting the other provisions.

13. Seller information

Prices (tax included): Monthly plan: ¥1,500/month, annual plan: ¥13,500/year (Japan storefront as of October 2026; prices in the app and each store prevail for other regions)
How to subscribe: From the Kotoba Pro screen in the app, via the App Store or Google Play purchase sheet
Payment method and timing: Charged to your Apple ID payment method (App Store) or via Google Play billing when the subscription starts after the free trial; auto-renews at the start of each period
Free trial: New subscribers get a 7-day free trial on both plans (no charge if cancelled during the trial)
Delivery: Kotoba Pro features become available in the app immediately after the subscription is confirmed
Cancellation: Turn off auto-renew at any time in your App Store or Google Play account settings; renewal stops at the end of the current period. Refunds follow each store’s policies
Other costs: Communication costs needed to use the app
Requirements: As listed on the app’s App Store or Google Play page

14. Governing law and jurisdiction

These Terms are governed by the laws of Japan. Any dispute arising from these Terms or the use of the app is subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Tokyo District Court as the court of first instance.

15. Changes to these Terms

We may change these Terms as necessary. The revised Terms take effect when posted on this page, and users who use the app after a change are deemed to have agreed to the revised Terms. Significant changes will be announced in the app.
